Practice Areas
Tax Audits, Appeals & Litigation
For over 35 years, MM&R attorneys have been representing and defending businesses, their owners, and other individuals in IRS and state tax audits, including litigating cases against the IRS in the United States Tax Court and against IDOR in the Illinois Independent Tax Tribunal. Defending a tax audit requires a unique set of skills, including technical knowledge of Federal and State tax laws, a comprehensive understanding of IRS rules and procedures, and practical courtroom litigation experience.
MM&R tax controversy attorneys have extensive experience and knowledge in representing business and individual taxpayers in both the administrative and litigation phases of the tax controversy process, including examinations, administrative appeals, negotiation and settlement of tax controversies, trials, and appellate litigation. We have effectively represented taxpayers ranging from local, family-owned businesses to international corporate enterprises.
In addition to our tax controversy experience, we have expertise in minimizing our clients’ risk of exposure to potential tax audits through the process of requesting and obtaining private letter rulings and other technical advice from the Internal Revenue Service.
