Belleville, IL, July 16, 2012. The law firm of Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd. (MMR) recently awarded a $1,000 law scholarship to Gabriela Zamfir, a 2012 graduate of Belleville West High School.

Law Scholarship 2012

Zamfir, who is currently enrolled at SIU Edwardsville, was selected to receive the scholarship based on her exemplary academic career, community volunteerism and involvement in extracurricular activities throughout her high school career. Zamfir maintained a 5.0 GPA while taking all honors courses in addition to her participation in numerous clubs, including the Model U.N. Club, Debate Team, Science Club and Odyssey of the Mind. She also was a reporter and editor of the high school’s newspaper, The Hy News. Zamfir has received numerous awards for her hard work, including the District #201 Outstanding Achiever Award, the Belleville Rotary Club Young Woman of Achievement Award and Illinois State Scholar 2012-2013, and she is a member of the National Honor Society.

The law scholarship recipient is chosen based on a number of qualifications outlined in an application that was offered to all high schools in St. Clair County. Applicants had to be a current high school senior, planning a career as an attorney, earning a GPA of 3.0 or higher, achieved an ACT score of at least 26 or SAT of at least 1180, ranked in the upper 25th percentile of the graduating class and involved in extracurricular activities. The selection process involved a comprehensive review of all applicants by MMR attorneys, who weighed other factors such as an essay, high school achievements and teacher/school recommendations.

Kevin Richter, shareholder of MMR, states, “Gabriela exemplified outstanding academic achievement and determination, and I am sure she will demonstrate the same dedication in her pursuit toward earning a law degree. We’re pleased to help support her dream of becoming a lawyer.”

This is the 13th year that MMR has awarded scholarships to local high school students. Shareholders of the firm established the scholarship as a means to encourage and assist students in pursuing a legal career.
