Belleville, IL, June 1, 2010. The Belleville law firm of Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd. (MMR) recently awarded scholarships to three area high school seniors who are pursuing a career in the field of law. The students awarded the $1,000 scholarships include Jamie Crockett (East St. Louis Senior High), Brittney Durbin (Mascoutah High School) and Amy Fournie (Freeburg Community High School).

The recipients were selected based on a number of qualifications outlined in an application that was offered to all high schools in St. Clair County. Applicants had to be a current high school senior, planning a career as an attorney, earning a GPA of 3.0 or higher, achieved an ACT score of at least 26 or SAT of at least 1180, ranked in the upper 25th percentile of the graduating class and involved in extracurricular activities. The selection process involved a comprehensive review of all applicants by MMR attorneys who weighed other factors such as their essay, high school achievements and teacher/school recommendations. Each of the chosen recipients met or exceeded the criteria.

Kevin Richter, a shareholder of MMR, states, “Each award recipient has shown drive and determination in their academics and beyond, which made them ideal candidates to receive the scholarship. It’s very gratifying as a lawyer to know young adults are interested in lending their talents towards a career in the legal field.”

This is the 11th year that MMR has awarded scholarships to local high school students. Shareholders of the firm established the scholarship as a means to encourage and assist students in pursuing a legal career.
