Belleville, IL, May 23, 2011. Belleville West High School senior Paige Glazebrook, along with shareholders from Belleville law firm Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd. (MMR), and local artist Kevin Trobaugh, last week unveiled a new city sculpture to a crowd of several hundred VIP guests attending Art on the Square’s VIP Reception. The sculpture was designed by Glazebrook as part of a new and interactive arts program through Art on the Square called the High School Sculpture in the City program. MMR, a recognized supporter of the arts community in Belleville, is the official sponsor of the program through 2013.

Student Sculpture Unveiled-FINAL

High School Sculpture in the City engaged students from Belleville West High School in an art challenge to create a one-of-a-kind sculpture that will be permanently installed at the school following this year’s fair. Glazebrook’s design was chosen from more than 50 student submissions. Sculptor artist Kevin Trobaugh guided students through the process, providing an introduction to public art and helping fuel students’ imaginative juices as they tackled the design process. Once the design was selected, Trobaugh, a union sheet metal welder, worked with the welding classes at Belleville West on fabricating the piece.

“It was a really great experience to work with a professional artist and learn about designing public art,” stated Glazebrook. “It’s not every day that students get this opportunity for a real hands-on experience. It was really amazing.”

Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd., was proud to sponsor the new program and help create such a unique experience for local students. Pat Mathis, shareholder of MM&R, commented, “Our firm has long supported local arts and education so this program falls right in line with our mission to support such community-based projects. Paige and the other students from Belleville West did a great job and the city is benefiting from their talents.”

MMR has been a longtime supporter of Art on the Square and its Corporate Collections and Sculpture in the City programs. The law firm purchased a sculpture titled “Duet” that sits out front of its offices at 23 Public Square in downtown. Additionally, MMR regularly hosts local artist exhibits in its office gallery space and each year purchases art from Art on the Square that is also showcased at its office. High School Sculpture in the City will continue through Belleville area high schools in years to come so that more students benefit from the experience and the community gains more outstanding public art.
