For many years, Illinois teachers have been able to claim a tax credit for supplies they purchase out of their own pockets. In 2023, this credit doubled.

Beginning in 2023, teachers can claim up to $500 in tax credits for classroom materials and supplies they purchase themselves.

In order to qualify, the teachers must teach students in Kindergarten through 12th grade (not preschool or college), must work in a qualified school, and must work at least 900 hours per school year.

This credit is also available to school instructors, counselors, principals, and aides.

If both spouses are teachers and file a joint tax return, the couple is limited to a total credit of $500.

Most teachers likely spend more than $500 for classroom materials and supplies and qualify for this credit. Be sure to keep your receipts and give them to your return preparer at tax time.
