Starting July 1, 2022, nursing moms and moms-to-be will not pay sales tax in Illinois for many breastfeeding items.

Beginning July 1, 2022, breast pumps and “breast pump collection and storage supplies” are exempt from Illinois sales and use tax. In addition to the pump itself, batteries or other power supply units, breast shields, pump tubes and tubing adapters, pump valves and membranes, backflow protectors, bottles and bottle caps specific to the operation of the pump, and milk storage bags are all exempt from sales tax.

Unless included in a kit packaged by the manufacturer, bottles and bottle caps not specific to the operation of the pump, breast pump travel bags, ice packs, pump cleaning supplies, nursing bras, and creams are not exempt from sales tax.

If you are purchasing any of these items, be sure to check your receipt to make sure the retailer has updated its system to exempt these items from sales tax.
