Rebecca K. Wohltman

Bio

Rebecca K. Wohltman is a shareholder at Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd. She focuses her practice at MM&R in business law, tax matters and estate planning. Becky has assisted clients of all sizes in forming, buying and selling businesses. She enjoys learning about her clients’ businesses and the unique services and products each client offers. Her background in accounting brings a unique perspective to handling tax issues for her clients. She has successfully resolved federal and state criminal tax cases, guided clients through federal and state tax audits, obtained dozens of favorable decisions from IRS Appeals, and represented several clients in a variety of Tax Court cases. She enjoys learning about her clients’ businesses and the unique services and products each client offers.

Becky was part of the MM&R team that convinced the Department of Justice to decline prosecution of a criminal tax matter in 2015 and the IRS to completely concede a multi-million-dollar tax court case in 2017. She has helped close more than $300 million of asset, stock, and real estate transactions for dozens of types of business.

Prior to joining MM&R in 2015, Becky worked in the Office of the Missouri Attorney General as an Assistant Attorney General in the Financial Services Division. There, she received an AGO “Best Brief” award for her appellant/cross respondent’s brief in Cooling v. State of Missouri, Family Support Division, an appellate review of a request for attorney’s fees. She also prosecuted and obtained judgments of more than $50,000 against employers who failed to comply with income withholding orders, served as first-chair in several trials, including prosecuting non-compliant employers, and defending agency actions, wrote multiple briefs for Missouri Court of Appeals cases, and argued a case in front of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District.

Becky was admitted to the Missouri Bar in September of 2012 and to the Illinois Bar in May of 2015.

Becky is a member of the American Bar Association, St. Clair County Bar and Illinois State Bar Association.

 

Education
Becky earned her LL.M. in taxation from Washington University in 2018, where she was awarded the Gary I. Boren Memorial Award, which is given to the highest-ranking student completing the LL.M. in taxation. Becky earned CALI Excellence for the Future awards in Corporate Taxation, Tax Fraud Prosecutions, Closely-Held Business & Succession Planning, and Practical Skills Training in Estate and Wealth Planning at Washington University.

She graduated summa cum laude from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2012 where she received academic awards for highest grades in Criminal Law and Banking Regulation. Before law school, she attended McKendree University where she received a B.B.A. in Accounting and a B.A. in Political Science, graduating summa cum laude in 2009. Becky was named McKendree’s Lincoln Laureate in 2008 and received the Award for Service to the School of Business in 2009. During her studies at McKendree University, she was on the debate team from 2005 – 2009.
